Ablation surgery can aid many persistent conditions. There have been cases when a patient would frequent the doctor’s clinic because of inflamed tonsils. Despite the medications prescribed, and close monitoring to prevent further inflammations, the condition becomes recurrent. Eventually, the doctor would have to recommend the complete removal of the tonsils. This scares the patient as it would mean an invasive therapy. The physician would then have to explain that if the tonsils are not removed, it would then be dangerous to the health as this will now enable the bacteria to invade the body easily. Removal of the tonsils would prevent such dangers. Medically, the removal of tonsils is called tonsillectomy. This removal by the use of a scalpel falls under the ablation surgery category.
Uses of ablation surgery
Ablation is the mechanical removal of an unwanted tissue that may be harmful to the body. Ablation surgery is the medical procedure that methodically excises the harmful tissue by using a scalpel, laser or high radio frequencies causing heat and death of the tissue. The failure to remove the unwanted tissue can cause at the least, infection. For the worst case scenario, the removal of the unwanted tissue may hinder a biopsy from being performed. This may also delay the treatment for a potential deadly disease like that of cancer.
The excision of organs like thyroid gland and the uterus or the ovaries are not usually referred to as ablation therapy of the uterus, thyroids, etc. Instead, they are known by their medical procedures: removal of the thyroid is known as thyroidectomy, uterus and ovaries as hysterectomy, etc.
Types of ablation surgery
There are several types of ablation surgery. Dermabrasion or the removal of dead skin tissue to promote regeneration can be induced by peeling chemicals or by the use of lasers. Another is Otolaryngology ablation which is used to treat conditions such as snoring. For the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia, ablation therapy by using radio frequencies is used. Another type of ablation surgery is laser surgery which melts the molecular bonds of tissues causing thermocoagulation or the thermal vaporization of the tissues. Rotoablation is used to clean out clogged arteries freeing it from it fatty deposits or plaques. This type of ablation surgery is best used in a coronary heart disease so as to promote uninterrupted blood flow.
Radio frequency ablation is a surgical procedure that removes abnormal tissues within the body utilizing the most minimal of invasive procedures. Ablation surgery is also widely used in the preparation of a bone marrow transplant, however, instead of a scalpel, chemotherapy and radiation are used. In the past, in order to treat psychosis or schizophrenia, frontal lobe lobotomy, or the excision of a brain tissue, was declared as the ultimate of treatments. Presently, this surgical procedure has evolved and improved. However, the concept is the same with the removal of a brain tissue on the frontal lobe, using ablation surgery, to correct neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease. The most modern use of ablation surgery recently has been the development of genetic ablation which targets unwanted cells, like tumors. This method is still under research, however, and further studies may have to be conducted on ablation surgery in this field, to fully understand its impact in the study to fight cancer.
